The Serval Project

“Mobile telephony for those in need.”

The Serval Project are a team based at Flinders University in South Australia developing revolutionary, free, open-source software for mobile telephones.

Serval Mesh is an app for Android devices that lets people call, text and file share with each other even in the absence of phone towers and other supporting infrastructure. The primary motivation for developing Serval Mesh is to provide resilient communications during crisis and disaster situations, when vulnerable infrastructure like phone cell towers and mains electricity are cut off. The Serval Mesh app uses ad-hoc Wi-Fi and mesh networking technologies to connect phones to nearby peers, or access points, to create self regulating networks.

The Serval Project is also developing the Serval Maps app for Android which uses Serval Mesh file sharing to provide decentralised mapping.
