The Serval Project

Serval is revolutionary, free, open-source software under development for mobile telephones. It enables people to communicate even in the absence of phone towers and other supporting infrastructure. This is especially important for modern society due to reliance on vulnerable telecommunications infrastructure. The primary scenario Serval is developing towards is enabling resilient communications during crisis and disaster situations. The project uses ad-hoc Wi-Fi and mesh networking technologies to connect phones to nearby peers, or access points, to create self regulating networks. The team has been developing a range of different applications using this software including: decentralised mapping (Serval Maps), SMS service over the mesh (MeshMS) and distributed data transfer (Rhizome).
